Stylishly incorporating Old-World influences into a new-build home is no small feat. Fortunately architect Keith Jakobsen (of Jakobsen Associates) was the mastermind here, designing an 18th century-style English house, but with materials and proportions that create a contemporary feel.
Many of the objects within the home tell their own stories. The reclaimed nine foot wooden doors are from a demolished Chicago hotel, while the kitchen pendant lighting fixtures were salvaged from a New York warehouse. Even the mantelpiece comes from a nursing home built by the Rothschilds. Our client also incorporated furnishings that had been passed on through the family, including the Chippendale-style chair in the master ensuite, scroll-back chairs in the staircase, and a 250-year-old grandfather clock in the study.
Modern is so popular, so we were really excited to build this Georgian colonial classic. Sometimes we cringe when people ask us to tear down homes that are only 30 to 40 years old. We build homes to last 100 years. —Joe Geluch, Naikoon

One thing we needed to improve from a typical Georgian home was the environmental performance. To achieve Built Green Canada gold certification, we spray-foam insulated the tumbled brick-clad home, contributing to a nice, airtight envelope. A heat recovery ventilation system runs 24 hours a day, paired with top quality windows and finishes to keep the home running at peak efficiency.
